Vedanta should be learnt only from a Sadguru

The Supreme Energy, the Universal Mother, is the force behind all the divisions and movements in this universe. She is the one who gets all the various jobs done in this universe through the living entities, yet the living entity seeks to know the answer to the question, “Who am I?”

The real answer to the question “Who am I” is “I am that Supreme Essence itself.” To experientially understand that you are the Supreme Essence, it is important to learn Vedanta directly from a Self-realized master. Vedanta cannot be mastered by merely reading books.

In the Lalita Trishati (300 names of the Divine Mother), Lord Hayagriva preached Her essence completely to Maharishi Agastya. In this he has declared that Devi itself is the ‘Hreem’ Tattva.

The Sun doesn’t move. It doesn’t do any work. But yet, it is the only cause for all movement and life on earth. On seeing the moon, we exclaim, “What brightness! How cool it feels!” But don’t we know that the moon gets its brightness from the Sun? Which means that the root is again the Sun’s illumination!

In the similar way, His illumination is the cause of our illumination or Jnana. We normally say that when the darkness vanishes when light emerges. In reality, the light always exists. Similarly, Sadguru’s blessings and always exist. It is a self-illuminating. It is your duty to uplift yourself and make yourself eligible to receive it.

Sadguru is a very efficient teacher. Hence Vedanta should be learnt directly from him. Treating the Sadguru as a true friend, having complete faith and trust in him and with pure love, if one listens to his preaching even for 10 minutes, he can experience a tremendous increase in his positive energy. Just as a TV or radio receives the signals, the tuned heart is able to absorb and understand the preaching of the Guru. He can then lead you in the proper direction**.** It is not sufficient if the teacher is efficient; for proper learning you should learn to be an able and good student.

Confusions, disturbances, agitations and instability are common to every mind. Don’t let them distract you. With love if you try to analyze and understand the reason behind the mental disturbance and sorrows then they will automatically vanish. They can no longer disturb you.

Swamiji teaches Vedanta through small lessons.
