You are thinking in this way because you have not understood it properly. You have not understood properly because the teacher was not proficient in the subject or perhaps you were not concentrating when it was being taught. There are a lot of metaphors in these stories which are called mythological so that it appeals to all. Once you reach the stage of Vedanta, these mythological stories become unimportant.
