Bhagavatam 0328: Daksha chants the hymn ‘hamsa-guhya stotram’

Moon-god continued to explain to the Pracetās,

“Tokānāṁ pitarau bandhū dṛśaḥ pakṣma striyāḥ patiḥ Patiḥ prajānāṁ bhikṣūṇāṁ gṛhy ajñānāṁ budhaḥ suhṛt

Parents are the guardians and protectors for children; eyelid is the protector for the eye; husband is the protector of his wife; householder is the protector of beggars; a learned scholar is the protector of the ignorant; the king is the protector of subjects who causes their welfare.

The Supreme Lord exists in the form of the Self within every living entity. Please understand that this entire universe is His residence. Giving up dualities and differences please see Him as pervading the entire universe. Then the Lord will be supremely pleased with you.

It appears as if anger accidently jumped into your bodies from the skies. Or perhaps it has manifested from your heart-space. The person who subdues anger through proper Self-inquiry will easily cross this samsāra that is composed of the trigunas.

Hence please subdue your anger and stop destroying the trees in the creation. May the trees which still remain be rendered auspicious! O Pracetās, this beautiful divine girl has been raised by the trees. Please accept her as your wife”. In this way, Moon-god who is the Lord of herbs, pacified them with sweet words.

He gave Māriśa, daughter of the celestial lady (apsara) Pramloca, to them in marriage and then returned to his abode. Pracetās married her exactly as per the procedures stipulated in the scriptures. Through her they begot a son named Daksha. As the son of Pracetās he became famous of Prācetas. This Daksha caused this creation to expand significantly.

Daksha Prajāpati filled the three worlds with his progeny. He was extremely fond of his daughters. Through his mind and his radiance he created living entities. Please listen attentively to the details I am going to now narrate.

At first through his mind Daksha Prajāpati created Devatas, demons, human beings and other living beings that have space, earth and water as residences. He thereafter felt that creation was not progressing as quickly as he planned. Not content with his accomplishments, he decided to perform intense austerities. He reached a mountain within the Vindhya range.

Bathing thrice a day in the Aghamarṣaṇa pond which destroys all sins, he undertook very severe penance to please Lord Srihari. He worshipped the Supreme Lord, who is beyond the senses, with a secretive powerful chant known as Hamsa-guhya stotra and thus pleased Him. I shall now explain that hymn to you. Please listen attentively.

Daksha Prajāpati chanted,

“Namaḥ parāyā-vitathānubhūtaye guṇa-trayābhāsa-nimitta-bandhave Adṛṣṭa-dhāmne guṇa-tattva-buddhibhir nivṛtta-mānāya dadhe svayambhuve

I offer obeisance to the Self-luminous Supreme Lord who is of unparalleled illumination; who is the controller of the living entities and of the illusory power composed of the three attributes of Nature (trigunas); who is beyond the reach of the spiritually ignorant persons who, trapped in these trigunas, consider the world to be real, and who cannot be understood through any direct visible proofs.

This Lord resides as the Self within the body of every living entity. In this body which resembles a city He resides as an eternal friend of the conditioned soul. He is the supreme witness for the entire creation. However the conditioned soul fails to recognize this Lord, who, as the witness, resides within him.

Ear and other senses are able to understand sound and other sensory perceptions. However the sensory perceptions are unable to understand about the sense organs. Likewise the conditioned soul is unable to understand the Supreme Lord who resides within him as the Self. To such Supreme Lord I offer obeisance.

The conditioned soul, who is the Seer (dṛṣṭa), is beyond the cluster known as body, prāṇa (life-force), senses, mental modifications, the 5 gross elements of space, wind, fire, water, earth and the 5 subtle elements of sound, touch, form, taste, smell. He sees not only these elements but also experiences happiness-sorrows etc. that emerge out of the trigunas. Nevertheless, this conditioned soul, who recognizes them all, fails to recognize the omniscient Supreme Lord, who is beyond him and beyond the differences of time and place. To such Supreme Lord I offer obeisance.

Only when the activities of the mind and senses are brought to a complete halt, the mind, which otherwise is filled with name and form, merges into its original form. At that moment the conditioned soul rests with the Self, which inherently is non-dual. This is the manner in which the conditioned soul reaches the Lord, who actually is his inner Self. I offer obeisance to that omniscient Lord who illumines as the Self in pure uncontaminated minds.

Avyakta (unmanifest), cosmic intelligence (mahat), mind, ego and the 5 subtle elements – these 9 material elements are the outcomes of the trigunas or the energies of the Supreme Lord. Within them i.e. within the heart, the Lord secretively and fixedly resides as the eternal witness.

Chanting 15 Sāmidheni mantras, Vedic scholars bring out the fire that is secretively hidden in wood. Likewise Mahatmas who exercise great mind-control, wisely introspect about these 9 material elements. Then through the medium of their intellect (buddhi) they realize the Supreme Lord to be their Self.

Sa vai mamāśeṣa-viśeṣa-māyā- niṣedha-nirvāṇa-sukhānubhūtiḥ Sa sarva-nāmā sa ca viśva-rūpaḥ prasīdatā maniruktātma-śaktiḥ

The ultimate bliss that emerges in my heart when this illusory world, which is replete with innumerable names and forms, dissolves completely is itself the Supreme Lord! It is He who manifests as these innumerable names and forms of this universe. May that Supreme Lord, who is beyond speech and who possesses infinite illusory energy, be pleased with me!”
