020: Birth of Sugriva

Śri Maha-ganapataye namah

Did we not discuss that God’s ways are very strange? The Sun-god witnessed Indra’s arrival and departure from the Gandharva garden. Now, nothing can escape the Sun’s gaze, isn’t it? The Sun-god, Wind-god pervade everything and hence are aware of all happenings. It is the same with Mother Earth. Often people sin presuming that they are not being observed. Remember that the five elements witness every action of ours! Our inner Self is also a witness. Sun, Self, earth, wind, and sky – they are eternally watching our good as well as bad deeds.

Sun-god Surya was watching this incident from heaven. After Indra went away, he descended to this garden and tightly embraced Ruksharajasa’s neck. A vānara boy jumped out of Ruksharajasa’s neck (griva) and he was named Sugriva.

When Indra held Ruksharajasa’s tail, from there a boy emerged. Now Surya held him by his neck and from here too a boy emerged. As these babies are born from Yoga, they don’t have to go through new-born stage. The need to buy cradles for them, sing lullabies do not exist in such deliveries. Even before the mother can address them after their birth, they jump on to the tree branches.

Ruksharajasa, the female vānara, was petrified when Surya held her tightly by her neck and began to sob inconsolably. Surya consoled her and explained to her the uniqueness of that lake. He explained to her that she could regain her original male form if she dipped into that lake for a second time.

Ruksharajasa was perhaps petrified that after Indra and Surya, hordes of deities who presided over the many star constellations would queue up to touch her and she would produce babies endlessly and so she sobbed miserably.

When Surya provided her with a solution to come out of her predicament, Ruksarajasa was pleased. She dipped into the pond and obtained her original male form. Just as Ruksharajasa was all set to fly back home, he observed the two helpless vānaras. His heart melted seeing their helpless faces.

They were no ordinary vānara babies. They were children of Indra and Surya. Their cute and helpless looks melted Ruksharajasa’s heart. All babies are cute- irrespective of whether they are monkey babies or pups or kittens.
